Yep. The equipment for making the strawberry shortcakes was not being use at the strawberry farm off season. Looking for a way to use the equipment, the Twinkie was born. Originally it was filled with banana cream filling until WWII when bananas were rationed. Vanilla cream was substituted for banana.
