To celebrate the new breadwig.com design (which is basically just a much simpler/cleaner version of the old breadwig.com), I decided to do an illustration of one of my favorite cartoon characters. Click on VIEW FULL POST to see how I made it

First I started with the linework. Drawn with an ultra-fine point sharpie on copier paper, no pencil drawing first.

Then I blocked in the color with a simple flat brush in photoshop.

I wanted it to look much more painterly, so I took the mixer brush tool with a customized natural brush to smear around the colors.

Next I added adjusted the colors and added some texture. I created the texture by staining some paper with some coffee, stepping on it and then putting it in the oven for awhile.

Finally I added the line work back in over the top. I also made it colored instead of just black and white.

And here’s the final again. I was happy with how undigital it looks.

This is based on sketch that I did in church on Easter. This is a little different than most of my work. I recorded myself making it, so you can watch the whole thing being created in the included video. Watch it full screen and let me know what you think.

Making of The Thing…..

Sounds scary don’t it? It do, it do. But it’s really just a short making of movie for my illustration of Ben Grimm from the Fantastic Four. I put it together for a talk I’m doing for the local chapter of Siggraph. Anyways, enjoy, and it really does look better in HD on Vimeo.

Pug Progression

My friend Mindi asked if I ever drew pugs. I realized no, I had never drawn a pug. So I started drawing some. Here is my first pug sketch. Pretty standard. Kind of boring. But drawing things more representationally at first helps me figure out what is defining about it. If that makes any sense.

“I need to Breadwiggify this”, I thought to myself in quotation marks. So I drew this one.

That looked better, but I wanted to push it further, so I tried making the legs just sort of hang off the frong of him. I also gave him burger bun lips.

I need to loosen up, I thought without quotation marks. So I tried drawing him quicker, looser, more slobbery.

That led to this drawing, where he’s getting nice and lumpy/foldy. Kind of like poorly mashed potatoes in your laundry.

And here’s the final drawing I did. I think he’s cute in a weird puggy kind of way.

Where the Wild Things Are: Part Deux

Well, my second WTWTA illustration will have to wait a few days. I’ve been requested to keep in on the down low until it gets featured on TerribleYellowEyes. So, in a couple days I’ll have the whole illustration a process back up. Until then, here’s a teaser. Doug, you got in early and it paid off!

Dragon along

This fearsome fellow was done for The League of Robots and Monsters. I’m including some sketches and other making of stuff.

First comes the sketch. I was going for a vile and ferocious beast, with just a hint of reptilian sophistication.

Next I started modeling him in 3d based on the aforementioned sketch. A simple sketch begets a simple model. Who’d have thunk it?

Now I am by no means a very good UV mapper. And I find the process tedious and frankly, repulsive. But I have to say, I do think the UV map for this guy turned out pretty good. UV mapping is the process where you basically peel the model apart like in taxidermy, so the 3d program knows where to put the textures. It is both gruesome and bothersome.

As you can see, I then can use it as a guide when painting in the textures.

And here’s the final dragon. I have decided to name him Turnip. There are more plans for this fellow, hopefully I’ll get to them sometime.
